There Is Something for Everyone to Do at Head of the Meadow Beach:

  • Surf the Waves – Depending on the tide, wind direction and swells, the waves are often ideal for Boogie Boarding, Surfing, and Swimming

  • Explore a Shipwreck – At low tide you can occasionally see and explore the remains of shipwrecks along some of the sandbars, such as the 1872 wreckage of the Frances

  • See Wildlife – You may see seals swimming offshore or sandpipers and other native shore birds along the beach or dunes

  • Fly a Kite – The breeze coming off the ocean can be perfect for flying kites, especially in the afternoon.

  • Go Fishing – surf fishing from shore can be excellent, especially in the early morning or at night with fishermen catching striped bass, flounder, cod, and blue fish.

  • Enjoy a Beach Fire – In the evenings nothing is better than gathering around a Cape Cod beach fire cooking hot dogs and smores and enjoying the stars.   Each evening the Town of Truro will allow a few beach fires by permit only (free permits are available from the Truro Fire Department on a first come basis for Truro beaches.)

  • Gaze at the Stars – See the spectacular display of stars and The Milky Way on any clear evening from the beach.  You will be stunned by how bold the night sky appears here since you are surrounded by nature and the National Seashore instead of city lights.  Watch for meteor showers on evenings when the moon is not shining, especially the Perseids which are plentiful in early to mid August.

Your Relaxing Cape Cod Vacation Near the Beach Awaits…

After spending a peaceful day at the beach, there is no better way to fully experience the natural beauty of Cape Cod than “Camping Under the Stars” surrounded by the pine trees at nearby North of Highland Camping Area.

Head of the Meadow is one of the finest Cape Cod beaches, and it is just a short half mile walk from North of Highland campground.  Since the campground is completely surrounded by the Cape Cod National Seashore Park the setting is naturally beautiful with campsites nestled among the pine trees.  Since North of Highland is so close to the beach you often can actually hear the peaceful sound of the waves breaking on the shore from the privacy of your campsite.   Since Head of the Meadow Beach is only an easy 6 to 8 minute walk, you can quickly stroll down the sandy beach path through the National Park, or if you would prefer you can ride your bike or even drive down Head of the Meadow Road to the beach. Either way one of the best beaches on Cape Cod is conveniently only moments away.

Head of the Meadow Beach actually has two connected beaches, the one on the right is managed by the Town of Truro and the one on the left is a Cape Cod National Seashore beach operated by the National Park Service.  There is no charge to walk onto Head of the Meadow Beach from the Truro Town Beach side (to your right as you approach the beach) – it is free! Once on the beach you are welcome to walk as long as you like in either direction, using the facilities of either beach.  Of course if you would rather drive, then daily parking for a fee is also available at the Truro Town side.  If you prefer to park at the Cape Cod National Seashore beach, be sure to bring along your America The Beautiful Pass if you have one, the lifetime National Park pass is only $10 for senior citizens.

Remember, it’s just a short walk back from the beach to your campsite
